Raku
Raku is a Japanese firing technique that involves extreme temperature changes to produce unique and interesting glaze effects. Pots are removed from the kiln while still red-hot and placed in containers with combustible materials like wood and sawdust. The materials ignite in flame and the containers are closed and starved of oxygen, allowing for an intense reduction atmosphere that results in stunning iridescence or crackles that can only be achieved with raku.
Drastic thermal shock makes raku one of the most unpredictable and exciting firing methods— the risk is part of the fun!
